About
Hello! I'm Alice, which is my real name (most of the other names here have been changed, though, to protect the innocent). I live in an circa-100-year-old house in downtown Chattanooga, TN with my first husband, G-Dog (who is from New Canaan, CT), and a cockapoo named Nonnie (the moniker comes from a Laurens van der Post book). We have one kid (that we know of) -- a daughter, Emmie, who recently graduated from college and moved out on her own (keep your eyes open and you might spot her at some point, twirling joyously right before she tosses her hat in the air).
I originally hale from Batavia, NY, a quiet little town in rural western New York. G-Dog and I met while attending college in Carlisle, PA, and then moved on to Chapel Hill, NC together before finally settling in Tennessee. Other places we've lived in long enough to have a mailing address include London and San Francisco.
This blog is about a lot of things -- the places I visit, things I cook, people I meet, photos I take, things I read, and -- of course, politics. I'm an unrepentant, arugula-eating, progressive, liberal, lefty, euro-loving, educated elitist (yes!! bring on gay marriage, give us a single-payer, completely socialized health care system, and replace the stupid war on drugs with legal, regulated, uber-taxed marijuana -- and some very handy industrial hemp!).

Sadly, this makes me think of my situation at work, where we still feel at risk of being parked someplace to rust – no talk of a fast-track but off the track entirely. (But don’t feel bad for taking the picture; it’s rather cool that it can tell a story happening 1000’s of km’s away.)
Modern corporate culture sucks. I wish more people were paying attention. Then maybe things would change… …
I think that if American workers understood how badly they were being treated compared to European ones – and getting a sucky wage to boot – they’d react. They might even *gasp* join unions.
A girl can dream…
Heh. Unfortunately, they’re all watching “American Idol” and stuffing themselves with pizza pockets, while their eyes slowly glaze over as they lapse into a junkfood haze. So, by the time they flip on the radio in the morning (as they sit in the line at the McDonald’s drive-through, getting “breakfast”), they don’t have the mental wherewithal to disagree when Rush Limbaugh tells them that unions are evil.
So, no. They’re not going to react. Or join. They’re just going to escape into some more “reality” television. Good little worker bees.
Wait, I know this. This is the plot from “1984″. Hold on, “Fahrenheit 451″. Wait, I’ve got it, “Logan’s Run”. “The Island”. “V”.
Dang, I’m sure I’d think a lot better if I could eat soylent green.
Yum!!! ;-D
