Friday Creature

Moving on from the buzzards in my shore bird series, here is a lovely little blue heron, slowly stalking some food.

We had a nice, warm day at the beginning of the week and right now as I type this, I can hear the rumbles of a thunderstorm outside. I’m so happy that spring has finally settled into my little corner of the world, and I hope you’re seeing signs of it as well! Have a wonderful weekend (been to the Friday Ark yet?)!

Can you take just one more turkey vulture shot? This one looks like it’s coming in for a landing, but I think it was actually getting the hell out of dodge because that crazy old woman with the camera was getting too damn close.

Happy Friday (and Happy XiShun’s birthday), everyone! It’s the start of Spring Break here at Chez 10K, though there will no rest for the weary, unfortunately. Busy, busy, busy! As always, have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the Friday Ark!

A turkey vulture in flight!

Happy Friday, everyone! Check out the Ark and have a wonderful weekend!

Friday Creature

Happy Friday, everyone! Can you believe how quickly the week flew by? You can check last week’s creature post if you missed the drama of the fishkill that allowed me to become acquainted with a bunch of turkey vultures on Florida’s Tampa Bay coast. Here are a few more, still enjoying the lush buffet.

Have a wonderful weekend! Maybe we’ll even get treated to some slightly warmer temperatures… And as always, plenty of creatures will fill the ark!

Friday Creature

Bah. This is the winter that wouldn’t end!! I can’t remember there ever being this long a stretch of cold, dreary weather. But I’ve got shore birds and I’m putting them up! How’s that for a ray of sunshine?!? I’ve got a lot of them, so go ahead and settle in for a few months of Fridays from the coast of Florida.

I was down there for a few weeks in January and I arrived along with a blast of arctic air. It doesn’t freeze down there very often, so when it does, wackiness ensues. Iguanas fall out of trees, farmers soak their citrus trees and strawberries, and frozen fish wash up on the beach. Lots and lots of dead fish. I got out every day — either on my bike or for a run — in my little corner of the Tampa Bay, which usually found me going back and forth along the causeway between Bradenton and Anna Maria Island. Eventually, a small municipal army poured out of trucks onto the beaches to clean up the fishkill, but initially the work was done by the buzzards. There were so many enjoying an incredibly sumptuous buffet of fish.

They aren’t the most gregarious birds in the world, at least when it comes to people, so it was challenging to get photos of them. But I did manage to get a few, and since this is the bird that greeted me at the beginning of my trip, I’ll start of my series of 2010 Florida shore birds with this turkey vulture.

Have a great weekend, everyone! Stay safe and warm and dry, and try not to let the weather get you down. Eventually, spring will get here. And in the meantime, don’t forget to check the Ark!

And here we are, back to another grey, chilly, rainy Friday! Sheesh. This winter has definitely been both colder and wetter than usual. Surely, we’re due for some sun some time soon!

In the meantime, check out the creatures on the Ark and brace yourself, because next week I’m starting in on a long series of shore birds, no matter what the weather is like! Be safe and warm and happy!

Friday Creature

Wow! For the second time in one winter, it’s snowing in Chattanooga! What a crazy season this has been so far! It’s gorgeous, snowy winter wonderland outside, so here are some fitting birds (from our xmas trip to Ohio)…

More creatures are on the Ark! Have a safe, warm and happy weekend, everyone!

I still can’t bring myself to mock all you winter denizens with my warm, sunny shore bird shots — especially since I’ll be spending the day [insert music of doom] driving north… [more music of doom] … back into winter. Sigh.

So, here are some more cold geese, and a shout out to the Friday Ark. Just know that the taunting is coming (oh, and it will be months and months worth!)…

Another Day

I had hoped to do another sunset tonight and raced the sun — twice — this evening (long story!), but lost both times. So, here’s a bonus creature, a bird taking flight that I caught late this afternoon. I know you are overdue for an update and that’s coming soon…

Friday Creature

It was a gorgeous day here in Florida yesterday, but I’m not going to taunt all you folks still stuck in the winter with my warm-weather shots of shore birds. Yet.

Instead, here’s a series from a cold Ohio day back in December, of a goose coming in for a landing. Have a great weekend, everyone. As always, give a shout to the kids on the Ark!
