House-iversary

Three years ago today was our first night in this house. It felt a bit bittersweet at the time, but we’ve had three really good years here since then. I love the the neighborhood and the people, I dig the fact that I can ride my bike to some very cool places from here (and that we’re close to the busline!), and I look forward to the progress this area will be making from this point. Plus, it’s a really cool house — if you haven’t been by yet, I hope we can get you to visit some time soon!

I was outside a lot of the day today,* but I didn’t take any photos, so here’s one of the house from a little over three years ago.

* I had such a productive day! I watered all the plants (no small feat, since most of the herb garden, along with all the porch ferns, are inside for the winter, not to mention the regular house plants and the orchids!), did the laundry, raked all the leaves in the front and side yards (the back yard is next weekend’s project), ran 5K, and then started my first batch of kimchi (to be finished tomorrow, and done fermenting in a week or so!). Whew! I wish I could be this productive every day — then I could maybe finally knock a few things off of the dreaded to-do list!

Let it be known…

G-Dog has been tracking the Last Album Left Alive and has gone on the record with the following prediction:

I notice they’ve already eliminated albums by bands they’ve already covered on Halloween – Beatles, The Who, Talking Heads, VU. Obvious, but interesting that they just got rid of them right away.

Personally, I’m pulling for Ziggy Stardust. Bowie has three albums on the list (Scary Monsters, Ziggy, and Hunky Dory), which I think is more representation than any other artist has. Could be a clue. Plus, a “David Bowie” in the first set would be irresistible.

Further, Ziggy would make sense for Trey’s whole “penance” thing, which seems to be a theme this year – the screwed up rock star, etc…

“He took it all too far, but boy could he play guitar…”

Plus, the breakup last (almost) “five years” – and can you imagine Page featured on “Lady Stardust”?

I’m calling this one.

I think if he calls this right, G-Dog should be treated to a trip to the show. Especially since, a number of years ago (on July 21, 2004, to be specific), G-Dog and I were hanging out in Times Square and we saw Trey was also there with his family. G-Dog was wearing a Phish shirt at the time and I was poking him and saying, “come on! go say hi — it’s Trey freakin’ Anastasio!,” but G-Dog was all about not bugging the guy while he was trying to enjoy an afternoon out with his family, so he never did go over. Now, how cool was that?

The photographic evidence… Trey in Times Square, July 21, 2004

PS… PLUS, there’s a family connection, since my cousin Kenny ran into Trey up in SPA State Park in Saratoga Springs in 2007!

9,125 Days

Twenty-five years ago today, I married this guy. We were really just a couple of kids, with no idea of what we were getting ourselves into, but we’ve managed to survive the rough spots and thrive in the good times. It’s been a greater adventure than I’d ever imagined it would be and I’m eager to see what the next twenty-five will bring…

Friday Creature

Well, I came up dry, picture-wise, again this week. So, the FC had to wait until I had a chance to get the scanner working with this computer (which basically involved just downloading and installing some drivers, but I still didn’t get around to it until after dinner)… which all reminds me… does anyone out there have any experience with a photo negative scanner? I’d rather be scanning directly from the source, rather than from faded, dusty, scratchy photos.

But anyway, back to the subject at hand, which once again, is my dog (who recently became her own category). But just to keep things interesting, I dug out some photos from back in the fall of 1999, when Nonnie first came home to live with us. The top image is from that first evening — she was hungry, scared and covered in fleas, so we fed her, gave her a bath and let her have run of the house, so she could make sure there weren’t any cats lurking about. The second image is from a day or two later — she was still barely bigger than that cereal bowl.

More creatures await on the modulator’s ark! It’s supposed to be sunny and in the 70s this weekend, so Nonnie and I will be out playing in the yard all we can — I hope your weekend proves to be enjoyable!

Friday Creature

I’ve got a confession to make. I have been taking absolutely no pictures lately. I’ve been so busy and the weather has been a mixed bag, so I’ve got nothing. I dug this one out of the deep recesses of the archives. I don’t know if it will even qualify for the modulator’s ark, since it features a person just as prominently as it does the creature, but it’s a very young Emmie charging into the sea (well, Florida’s intercoastal waterway) with a not-yet-year-old Nonnie. I love this photo — it was featured on my refrigerator for years, and I was very happy to run across it once again this afternoon.

We interrupt your regularly scheduled programming…

… for this photo of my mother in Oslo just a few years ago. She always appreciated the fact that Norwegians throw a big party every year for her birthday and she got to visit the country several times over the years, as part of her many travel adventures.

I admit it…

I can’t keep up. I’ve got a backlog of stuff I want to post about, but there aren’t enough hours in the day. Just the politics news alone is overwhelming (in case you haven’t been keeping up, John McCain is evil and such a pathetic liar!). It’s being a fun, busy weekend, though, so I’m not getting caught up any time soon. In the meantime, I’m going to take a tiny break from the present — here’s a vintage photo of two of my favorite people, in a setting that seems very blue. Happy Birthday to one of them!

Happy Father’s Day

I’ve been thumbing through some old photos lately and have discovered quite a few overlooked gems in the archives, so at some point I think I might start a new feature for sharing blasts from the past. In the meantime, though, in honor of Father’s Day, which much of the world is celebrating today — with some notable exceptions — I thought I’d share a couple of photos.

I don’t get to spend Father’s Day with my father this year, but last year was a treat because the holiday fell on the same weekend as our annual family gathering. When he’s not at the office, my father can usually be found on the tennis court, so that is where I captured the second image below. The first one probably reaches back almost fifty years, for a study in (surprisingly little) contrast. I found it last year when I was perusing the old family photo albums. I think it’s a picture my mother snapped back when my parents were still a carefree couple — before the five children, and the wonderful chaos that arrived in our wake.

I think the same easygoing, energetic spirit is visible in both images.
