Random thoughts for a Friday…

This has not been a good week for Karl Rove. The news all seems to be breaking in Kerry’s favor — even the little things:

The Bush campaign abruptly stopped using the 1970s hit “Still the One” at campaign rallies today (Oct. 29) after the songwriter, no fan of the president, claimed the Republicans never got permission.

John Hall, a former Democratic county legislator in upstate New York, co-wrote “Still the One” and recorded it with his band Orleans in 1976. He complained today about the campaign playing the song at the president’s events.

[...]

Hall wrote “Still the One” with his then-wife, Johanna D. Hall. The two, as well as surviving members of the band, are supporters of Democratic candidate John Kerry and don’t want their work used to promote Bush’s re-election.

For the record, I don’t think Bush ever was The One.

And on another topic…

Doonsbury is back in the news:

In Garry Trudeau’s comic, the voice of Cheney directs a caricature of President George Bush to tell a reporter to “go f— himself.”

A spokesman for Kansas City-based Universal Press Syndicate said at least 20 newspapers have contacted the company to complain about the cartoon for Saturday editions.

Have any of the people who complain when people repeat Dick Cheney’s language ever chastised the vice president for his potty mouth? If so, I must have missed it. All I ever saw was a bunch of people making excuses for him. He was provoked. He’d had a bad day. This was a long time coming. Awwww. Poor boopsie. When you went home to your wife, Lynn — the woman who published a steamy lesbian fantasy, but who is horrified and insulted if someone refers to her lesbian daughter as “a lesbian” — did you kiss her with that mouth?

T minus 4 days

It’s time to have the election and move on. Everyone seems to be _at least_ a bit frayed at the edges. …And some people are just plain falling apart completely. I think maybe Rudy Giuliani jumped the shark today. He took what’s left of the goodwill he built up after 9/11, and like a good republican, he pissed it away (or did he piss on it?). Whatever. This whole election season has become far too mean and bitter. Let’s all vote and move on, OK?

An inauspicious time?

I watched the lunar eclipse this evening — it was breathtaking. I tried to take pictures but didn’t bother to get out a tripod, so they (predictably) didn’t come out very well. Oh, well — better photographers than me will have some images up on the internet tomorrow.

Today has also been a day when many turds hit numerous fans. A friend departed, another in transition, and THEC has been taken over by crackheads. The waters are churning and I’m feeling unsettled…

Chicken Soup

I’m feeling better now. Thanks to those who expressed sympathy and concern. It helped a lot to eat something today, which I hadn’t done since mid-Sunday. I had some brown rice this morning and actually felt up to making some chicken soup for dinner! It’s nice to have the whole being-sick thing over with before the holidays — and before the election… which is… OHMYRANDOMPANTHEISTICIDOL! — only a week away! I’m so glad to see that the Big Dog is back! Please go directly to Florida! Do not pass GO! Do not collect $200! (OK, so maybe you should stop in Arkansas on your way down.) And don’t overdo!

Fall Colors

The trees are just starting to change colors here. I work across the street from a really nice cemetery and I often walk there on breaks or my lunch hour. I only had time for a quick walk today and the weather was a little hazy, but it’s the first time I’ve been there with my camera since before all the rain came through last week, so this was the first opportunity I’ve had to try and capture the color show…

Links

Freaky and/or cool links from memepool today:

Japanese girls bitchslapping eachother

Biking in NYC traffic

Heavy Metal Belly Dancers!

Note: before clicking on any links (anywhere on the internet) that are of unknown origin to you (which probably includes 95 – 100% of all links), be sure you know you’re ready for the results. This probably means that you should be using a microsoft-free computer. At the very least, don’t use internet explorer (or any microsoft internet applications, for that matter). Firefox is a good alternative that blocks all popup windows.

Icons

Shockingly enough, I love a certain person’s new icon, even if it is blurry. I have a soft spot for laughter, if you must know. BTW, I caught more than one good shot that night. ;)

Reflections

I just realized that I haven’t put a picture up in a while. I don’t have anything I’ve taken ready, so here’s a little something from the iPods Around the World Gallery to spruce up the page a bit:

Clockwise from top left, the images are from: Zwolle, Shinjuku, Genova and Portsmouth (not that the locations are particularly relevant in this selection of photos, but there ya go).

Pointheads

I’ve fallen behind with email/internet stuff again and haven’t been able to use the weekend to catch up. But if anyone’s interested, here’s what I’ve been up to (besides GOTV efforts for the election):

Ku Klux Klan Planning a Rally for Dunlap, TN

The Klan was in Dunlap, TN today (one county over — very near Moonshadow, the commune where DD spent her summer), and I went over with a bunch of people to yell at them. It was great fun — we all blew whistles to make it hard for the grand poobah (or wizard or whatever) to be heard and after just 30 minutes or so, they gave up and announced that they were going to go elsewhere. It was also kinda scary — I’ve never been to a Klan event before and was surprised by how palpable the hate was. Fortunately, there were tons of cops there, so I didn’t fear for my safety, but the negative aura was very disturbing.

Anyway, I’m off this evening to a benefit auction to raise money for helping people with AIDS. DD and a friend stayed behind to go to the Ketner’s Mill Country Arts Fair, which is going on this weekend over near Dunlap and then they’re going to spend the night at Moonshadow and drive back tomorrow. I wish I could have stayed, but I can’t afford the time.

There’s just too much to do at this time of year! I’m glad I took the time out to go to Dunlap, though — the 45-minute rides over and back were beautiful as the route is on winding mountain roads and we’re just starting to see the rich hues of fall foliage here.

Oh! And I voted already! Early voting started on Wednesday here (we had a parade to celebrate that afternoon and DD voted for the first time, which was very exciting!), and I finally made it by the election commission on my way home on Friday. Jennie Blue was with me and they gave us stickers!

Now everyone else get your badassselves to the polls if you haven’t already!
