Well, it’s been an exciting week or two. I’ve had all kinds of server troubles, leading me to finally switch to MT (nothing against pivot — I just had to move everything to a MT server for reasons unrelated to pivot). The blog templates are still just the default MT, but at least I’m back up. I’ve got a backlog of good photos to share and all sorts of things have happened in the meantime that I haven’t been able to blog about, but eventually I’ll be able to get things caught up around here…
While I sort things out, here are a few tidbits:
- I did eventually hook up with joe — nice to meet you! I hope we cross paths again soon!
- Check out Team Icyhot! and…
- I finally made it to check out the new exhibit at Faith/Works today. It’s highly recommended! If you can’t make it over by April 2nd, you can still check out the art on Fridays and Saturdays.
More later…

The Strides of March was awesome. The weather was sunny and clear and there were lots of striders (and a few rollers and creepers). I went over a bit before noon and hung out, taking pictures and socializing, until close to six. A couple of celebrities joined us — named Danny and Paul — but I think they may be from reality TV because I never heard of them. They were nice guys, though, and really good sports about all the picture-taking. Once again, smijer turned up (wow! two days in a row — people are going to start talking!), and I hope Chattanooga Cares raised a ton of money.
It’s going to be another busy week… my folks are coming into town at some point (I should probably find out when…), and I haven’t even started with the cleaning and laundry yet…
(btw, I was out on the Walnut Street Bridge this afternoon and had to dump the card on my camera and when I booted up my computer, it detected a Wi-Fi signal — on the middle of the bridge! Nice.)

After just four hours sleep last night, I was up at five in the morning for the drive up to Elizabethton, TN for traffic school (I got a speeding ticket on the way up to Boone a few weeks ago). Fortunately, DH took pity on me and offered to help with the driving, as I don’t think I could have made the 8-hour round-trip on my own. Traffic school ended up taking just a little over an hour — the building was undergoing some renovation and the water was off for the day, so they gave us the short version of the first-offender lecture — and then we turned around and drove back to Chattanooga, arriving just in time to make it to the peace march/rally/vigil. The walk was invigorating and gave me energy so that I could enjoy the afternoon’s speakers, entertainment and food (from the local chapter of Food Not Bombs). I hooked up with smijer (who was very patient with the way I tend to flit about), and we tried to spot joe, but alas, we were foiled. I’m now (finally) back home, showered, warm and ready to get a good night’s sleep before heading out tomorrow for the Strides of March.

I took a ton of pictures last weekend at Fall Creek Falls and my subjects included plenty of water fowl. The relatively long and slender necks of the geese and mallards made those of the ducks seem almost nonexistent by comparison, but I caught this wood duck really stretching out — perhaps he was trying to appear big to impress one of the female ducks on the lake?
Links to other creature pictures can be found at the Friday Ark. Have a good weekend — if you’re in Chattanooga, I’ll look forward to seeing you at the peace march on Saturday or at the Strides of March on Sunday!

It’s a shame the weather is so dreary, but I hope this finds you all enjoying whatever it is you do to observe the holiday (or having a nice Thursday if St. P’s Day isn’t your thing). I’m still trying to get caught up and keep hearing the lyrics to Phish’s Heavy Things as I continue to fail to do so. Among other things this week, someone hacked into one of our servers at work, I turned another year older (gah!), DH came down with the fever/achy crud that’s been going around (I spent yesterday afternoon making chicken soup), and I’ve been busy with meetings in preparation for this weekend’s events and the local party’s April reorganization. I haven’t been keeping up with the news much and have to admit that I’m suffering from some of the outrage fatigue that’s been going around. I’m really hoping that when the March Madness finally gives way, April will prove to be restorative…

I’ve returned, and I brought some daffodils back with me. It was a great weekend — one that makes me think perhaps spring has finally arrived. Friday was cold and raw and there were even some snow flurries in the air as we drove up to the plateau, so we arrived at Fall Creek Falls thinking that the outdoors might not be all that hospitible during our brief getaway. That night, we built a fire and hunkered down in our little cabin on the lake, bracing for a chilly weekend. But the weather took a dramatic turn and Saturday surprised us all by turning into a warm and sunny day. It was a bit windy in the morning, but that only made the sunrise over the lake more exciting, and the afternoon brought calmer skies that were perfect for wandering in the woods.
In other news… while I was gone, the Rocky Top Brigade got a membership update, making 10K Monkeys an official Tennessee blog. I’ve done a quick blogroll update to include the group, and hope to tidy up the links and deal with few other minor bugs around here soon.
Have a great week!

Same dog, less hair.
It’s been an exhausting week — for the dog anyway. I’ve been feeling better physically, but I was still a bit overwhelmed (and it would seem that I’m not alone) — by the schedule, mostly. I think I should be back to posting on a regular basis next week. First, though, I’ll be spending the weekend up at Fall Creek Falls State Park. Whee!
Thanks for checking on me. Have a great weekend, stop by the ark, and keep your fingers crossed that this will be the last of the cold weather!
UPDATE: Bonus Creature pic! From just this morning, here’s an awake version of said cockapoo.
Another UPDATE: check out the absolutely breathtaking Friday Bird Blog from Bubba (whoo — gotta love the alliteration
)!

After a year or so of being tethered to a desktop (well, I still have my old clamshell, but it’s still running System 9), I’m mobile again. The powerbook arrived yesterday and while I’m still getting it all set up, I think I’ve got all the basic stuff loaded. Perhaps I’ll be seeing you local folks at one of the Wi-Fi hotspots in town some time soon…

This is our little friend, the cockapoo (standard poodle + cocker spaniel), making her second appearance on the blog (she was the first Friday Creature ever!). She’s getting very hairy, which is one reason I decided to make her the Creature this week, as she’s about to undergo a dramatic transformation. Because of the cold weather, we’ve been putting it off and putting it off some more, but this weekend we’re finally going to get around to the much-overdue shaving. I’ll try to catch a shot of the petite version after she’s lost all the hair… In the meantime, note that she’s not only on the furniture, but she’s also found herself some covers to enhance her comfort (she’s got us all pretty well trained). She has a slavish devotion to blankets — usually she wants to be under them, but I happened to catch her peaking out on this particular occasion (a few nights ago).
Have a great weekend, and enjoy the other creatures on the Ark!

Yeah, I’m here and feeling a bit better, but out of nowhere, life has gotten incredibly busy. I’m back to putting in a lot of hours at work, my weekends are booked up through March and at the moment, I’ve got 515 messages in my inbox.
Don’t worry about me if posting gets light here for a while. I’ll be back as soon as I get my head above water again…
