Random newsbits

Chilling stuff from rescue workers via BOING BOING.

From December, 2001.

Wikipedia is tracking the details.

UH OH.

Katrina news links from hamdems.

Pat Buchanan just announced that President Bush is derelict in his duty to protect America. Buchanan called for “some courageous Republican” to introduce a bill of impeachment.

And on othe lighter side of the news (maybe that last one should be in here):

Bush’s vacation was so long… …how long was it?

Some people get mad and some people get funny.

Remind me again how to spell schadenfreude?

Finally, we’ve decided that syndicated columnist Ann Coulter has worn out her welcome. Many readers find her shrill, bombastic and mean-spirited. And those are the words used by readers who identified themselves as conservatives.

This is the word from the Arizona Daily Star, which as part of a greater reworking the paper has given Ann Coulter the boot (thanks to egalia for the headsup).

Help for victims of Katrina

Hamdems has a thread set up for relief information. If you know of someone organizing volunteers or donations, post the info in the comments there. If you’d like to help out, there will hopefully be a growing list of organizations for you to choose from there.

Andy Dick as Harlan McCraney, the genius behind George W. Bush’s stupidity.

Operation Yellow Elephant goes on the road…

UPDATE: regarding the second video, one with sympathy toward the afflicted responds.

Harley, harley, harley…

I wish I had a helicopter, as I’d love to float over Chattanooga this weekend. That’s the only way, I think, we can truly appreciate how many harleys are in town for the HOG rally. I drove through downtown on my way home this afternoon to look at what’s here so far. There are rows and rows and rows of bikes everywhere you look. They’re parked along the streets (sometimes two or three rows thick). They fill the parking lots. They surround the aquarium. Every little inch of space that’s not in the right-of-way is filled with motorcycles. It’s an incredible sight!

UPDATE: more photos from the weekend from sboatright (or here).

Friday Creature

Gravits is the one who noticed this critter on the wall outside our favorite thai restaurant as we were walking back from lunch, so I’ll let her attempt the identification. It’s a huge version of whatever it is (hand-sized, unless you happen to play for the NBA). Once we get it IDed, go see what other varmints have turned up at the ark today.

My only plans for the weekend are to try to check out the forest of harleys down by the river. It’s HOG Heaven in Chattanooga this weekend (the multitudes started rolling into town yesterday). The city is expecting 12-15,000 riders to descend upon us. Yee-haw.

How’d it get to be Thursday already?!?

Back-to-school weeks always seem to fly by, I guess.

Anyway, if you care anything about education in Hamilton County, get thee over to the Bailes event this afternoon/evening. Even if you don’t live in his district, you still have a big stake in who wins that seat. Plus, word has it that a local blogger will be part of the entertainment. Go. See. Be seen. Get to know John. Make Hamilton County a better place.

Hunter Kelly

I only just learned of the death of Hunter Kelly this morning while getting caught up on some of my favorite blogs. He lived longer than any other kid with Krabbe disease, and his parents have devoted a lot of time to raising awareness of, and money for research into, the disease. I am sorry for the Kelly family’s loss and hope that they find some comfort in knowing that they’ve helped out countless others through their foundation and resulting screening program. Jim Kelly was one of the last great athletes to play for my favorite team before my interest in pro football was replaced by dispair over the way greed and circus freaks have taken over the game (I’ll be back when the rosters are cut in half and a player’s contract lasts longer than “until I can shake the fans down for even more shekels”). Jim has always been a class act and an asset to Buffalo, on and off the field.
