The Republicans Enabled a Pedophile

They knew (former) Congressman Mark Foley was a pedophile and sexual predator and did nothing to stop him (and the backpedaling and coverup have already begun, with the Washington Post’s participation, shockingly enough). Family values, my ass.

Friday Creature

Seriously, I do eventually plan to get back to birds and other warm-blooded beasts. It just happens that I keep encountering interesting bugs lately. Like this hairy arachnid, who was waiting for me in my shower yesterday morning. Anyone know what kind of spider this is? He’s not quite as big as is implied by the photo, but this way you can make out the details a bit (and don’t worry — I helped him to find another place to hang out, so he did not drown and was not squished).

As always, you can see a variety of other creatures over on the the Modulator’s Ark. Have a great weekend!

Kakistocracy

“A stark assessment of terrorism trends by American intelligence agencies has found that the American invasion of Iraq has helped spawn a new generation of Islamic radicalism and that the overall terrorist threat has grown since the Sept. 11 attacks.”
— April 2006 National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), a consensus view of the government”s 16 spy agencies

(Quote du Siécle)

It appears that the Torture Caucus in Congress will win the day and pass a bill that legalizes particular extreme interrogation techniques such as waterboarding, also known as torture. There is no doubt Pres. Bush will sign the torture bill into law.

(from A Cautionary Tale about Torture from America”s Military Past)

More here (link and early version of image via AmericaBlog):

The Geneva Conventions: The bill would repudiate a half-century of international precedent by allowing Mr. Bush to decide on his own what abusive interrogation methods he considered permissible. And his decision could stay secret – there’s no requirement that this list be published.

Bottom Line: we, as a nation, have lost our moral authority, and our troops are at greater risk because of it.

Corker Squirms

Here’s a heads up for all you non-local political junkies out there. Bob Corker, our increasingly embattled Republican Senatorial candidate, showed up on our local talk radio station last week, and one of the hosts, Robert T. Nash (who, btw, identifies himself as a libertarian, I believe**), really raked him over the coals. If you’d like to listen to the interview, go here and scroll down to “Live & Local” for the audio files. If you’ve got an aversion to listening to weasels with incredibly nasal voices, you might prefer to read the transcript, which follows after the jump.

UPDATE 1: Egalia is reporting that the GOP ‘Freaking Out’ Over Ford vs. Corker Race.

UPDATE 2: **my research indicated that Nash is a self-described libertarian. But I picked up a copy of our free local alternative weekly when I was out for lunch and it has an article in which he claims to be a republican. Either way, there’s no reason to believe that he is, as Corker claims, “aligned with Harold Ford.”

UPDATE 3: check out Rook’s coverage on Kos!

Iraq was a HUGE mistake

Everyone’s talking about the NIE Report (or is that Reports?), but make sure you don’t miss the latest from Keith Olbermann:

A textbook definition of cowardice

The headlines about them are, of course, entirely wrong.

It is not essential that a past president, bullied and sandbagged by a monkey posing as a newscaster, finally lashed back.

Chattanooga At Night

As I was driving toward downtown last night, I realized that we were about to be treated to a wonderful sunset. I took a little detour from my route, hooking up to the bridge spanning the Ridge Cut along Crest to get a good vantage point for watching the colors. It was a breathtaking sight. Over on the left of this photo is Missionary Ridge in the foreground and Lookout Mountain in the backgroud. The city lights are downtown Chattanooga and the little smattering of red tail lights in the foreground is vehicles driving along I-75 as it curves in toward town.

Stuff You Shouldn’t Miss

A lot’s been going on all weekend. President Bill Clinton, once again, showed us that he’s an unbelievably brilliant man. I wish everyone who gets sandbagged by the slezoids at Fox”News” were equipped to respond extemporaneously with this much composure and smarts (”WJC” is Brother Bill and “CW” is Chris Wallace, who as it turns out, is Clinton’s bitch).

WJC: [...] So you did FOX’s bidding on this show. You did you nice little conservative hit job on me. But what I want to know..

CW: Now wait a minute, sir –

WJC: [..]

CW: I asked a question. You don’t think that’s a legitimate question?

WJC: It was a perfectly legitimate question. But I want to know how many
people in the Bush administration you’ve asked this question of. I want to know how many people in the Bush administration you asked ‘Why didn’t you do anything about the Cole?’ I want to know how many you asked ‘Why did you fire Dick Clarke?’ I want to know.”

Democratic California Governor candidate Phil Angelides wants to pull the California Guard out of Iraq.

In the meantime, Bush has made the world a much, much more dangerous place, according to government intelligence. But we already knew that, didn’t we?

And speaking of the Chief Weasel, the little pansy is peeing his pants over the prospect of actual oversight by Congress, so he’s trying to legislate himself a preemptive pardon.

Being Paid to Post?

This is a growing trend in the blogging world and before it gets totally out of hand, I’m going to take a poke at the concept. I’ll start off by saying that I don’t like these pay-per-post schemes and if you have a fun little conversational, non-commerical blog, I’ve got a warning for you: as much as you think your blog won’t change if you sign up with one of the blog pimping services that are out there, you’re just fooling yourself.
