Letting Go of 2006…

I wanted to end the year with a whizz-bang photo from its final day, but we woke up to grey, dreary weather this morning. So, I stayed in for the most part (I only went out once, to get some games for this evening’s fun with the family), and enjoyed this totally diggidy-dank house — especially this afternoon, while it was filled with delectable aromas as DH assembled his traditional nouvelle année gumbo.

As a result, instead of going out with a blaze of photographic glory, all I’ve got to put up here is a puddle. But perhaps a humble end will work for me this year.

Regardless, please do have a Happy New Year! Blessings, good health and happiness in 2007. Let’s make this a really good one…

Year-end tidying

I cleaned out the blogroll (at right) today — the dead links, 404s and blogs that haven’t updated in a while are all gone now. If I wrongly deleted a link to your personal or favorite blog, let me know and I’ll put it back up.

(Eventually, I’ll get the links into some sort of logical order, but I’m not very good at that sort of thing, so it’s one of those jobs that never seems to get off the to-do list…)

Execution

The news just came through that Saddam Hussein is to be put to death by hanging at 6:00 Saturday morning Iraq time, which is 10:00 tonight here.

Is killing a man really the best form of justice we people can come up with?

Boy, that’s more than just a little depressing.

Friday Creature

Woot! I’m very happy to be finally bringing you the first of my shorebird photos from my Thanksgiving trip down to Florida. There were a few days this past week when I thought these pictures might be lost in the pool of beer that ended up in my computer on Christmas Eve, but it’s all dried out now and seems none the worse for wear. Whew!

So, on with the birds. This first set was exciting to see. In the upper left corner of the shot is an American Oystercatcher. The bright red bill caught my eye and I didn’t know what kind of bird I was seeing until I got home and looked it up in my Sibley Guide. I’m puzzled by the other two birds in the shot — can anyone help me out? Are they juveniles of the same species?

Here’s another view of the oystercatcher.

Have a wonderful weekend and a safe and happy New Year’s celebration. Check out more critters in the next few days on the modulator’s ark (boarding may be slow this week due to the fact that the modulator is someplace cool).

Good News

The Powerbook still may have a bit of life left in it afterall. It started up today, for the first time since Christmas Eve. It passed all the hardware tests. After I run a full backup, I’ll put it through some paces and see if it’s back to its old self again…

I’ll keep you posted…

Oh, no. Gerald Ford.

At least he outlived Ronald Reagan.

(p.s. Wasn’t James Brown enough?)

Happy Boxing Day

I hope whatever you’re celebrating is proving to be fun and relaxing. I have, predictably, been having my ups and downs this Christmas. The ups have included a wonderful Christmas Eve dinner with G-Dog, Emmie and SB [the Stupid Boy -- that's Emmie's boyfriend (he's not really stupid but he was kinda clueless early on and then the knickname just sorta stuck)]. G-Dog made hands-down his best yorkshire pudding ever for that meal. Highlights also included a fun Christmas Day dinner with SB’s family (the dog got out of the fence while we were gone, enjoying her first opportunity to tour the new neighborhood).

No matter how good it all is, though, it’s still the first Christmas without my mom and that’s been harder than I expected. I did bake her signature Christmas cookie recipe, but then I didn’t really have the stomach to eat them. They’re really good though, and if you pop in for a visit, you can plan on taking some home with you!

The other real bummer was when I spazzed out and dumped a beer into my laptop computer on Christmas Eve. It seems like I just got it back after shelling out for a new logic board right before Halloween, but I think it might be a total loss this time. I’m going to take it down to Atlanta tomorrow to see if I can find out for sure. I had hoped to get it examined by someone local, but all the mac geeks in town are taking long winter naps, or something…

While I’m not a big fan of Christmas, even in the best of circumstances (I’m more of a Thanksgiving kinda person), yesterday was the first day of my favorite week of the year. I call it Nebulous Week, because it’s smashed between two holidays and nobody really gets anything productive done until after the New Year. The kids and teachers are all out of school, all the hard work, shopping, cooking and decorating are done, and there’s a feeling of leisure and laziness to it all. It’s usually a week of eating leftovers and napping and puttering around the house… even if you do have to go to work, there’s often a suspended atmosphere there… I’m going to do my best to take the year out on a positive note. I was planning on getting some work done and maybe even going into the office a bit, but with my computer problems, I’m in a bit of limbo as far as job stuff is concerned (sorry about that, VU&PB [Very Understanding and Patient Boss]). So, I’m going to have to come up with some quick feel-good project I can knock out in these last days of 2006 (besides learning to juggle, which I started on yesterday) — I’ll see if I can’t hatch up a plan in the long drive down to Atlanta and back tomorrow…

Take it easy!

Friday Creature

I’m postponing the shore birds for one more Friday so that I might bring you a creature I only just met this past week. He’s an incredible siamese cat named Chamois, who might just think he’s a dog. He’s a very gregarious and talkative feline, anyway. More cats and critters of all kinds are queuing up over on the modulator’s ark. Have a wonderful weekend and a fantastic Festichrismahanakwanzivus!

BONUS! Here’s a special extra look at young Master Chamois!

Tipping?

Things are really starting to shape up around here. We had some furniture delivered today and the living room is looking much better now that two really mangy sofas have been replaced with pretty new, comfy seating.

In preparation for the morning’s delivery, DH (dear husband) and I arose early so that we might clear some space for the new furniture. Now, nothing would have made me happier than kicking the old sofas out to the curb, never to be seen again. The upholstery is in very tough shape, the cushions are misshapen and worn out, and frankly, after 14 years, I’m tired of looking at them. But unfortunately, we still need to keep them around until we can afford to outfit the little den upstairs. So instead of discarding the worn out old beasts, we had to haul them up the stairs.

We started with the smaller one (the love seat) as a warm up to the larger piece (the couch). I wasn’t looking forward to the job, but certainly we’re both physically conditioned for it — we’ve moved our entire household twice in the past several months and DH and I have moved just about every piece of furniture and box ourselves (we had some help in the first move, but due to some last minute rescheduling, we ended up pretty much flying solo the second time), and we’ve both held up pretty well — until today, that is.

About a week ago, spaz that I am, I tripped and fell while carrying a new stool into the house. I didn’t want to drop the stool on the pavement, so I held it up in the air and let my knee take the hit. The injury wasn’t all that bad and the knee has been feeling much better in the past few days, but it doesn’t really bend all the way yet. Which of course means that when I should have been lifting with my knees, I was making my back do all the work. You can probably guess what happened next.

After all these months of moving furniture, boxes and other sundry household goods, my body finally gave out. On the up side, at least my back waited for us to be pretty much finished with all the hauling before it went on strike. We did get the love seat up the stairs, but there was no way that couch was going to go anywhere, and DH had to get to work.

Enter the two furniture delivery guys. The couch was in their way, so I asked them if they’d mind moving it upstairs before bringing in the new stuff. They tossed it around like it was made out of styrofoam, and moving it took only a few minutes. They were really nice about it, so I wanted to give them a good tip. But here’s an area where I suffer from a severe lack of experience — I don’t live in a big city where tipping is called for on a regular basis and I can’t remember the last time I’ve had a purchase delivered to my home. I have no idea what is called for in this situation. These guys were working for a big chain store, so I wasn’t even sure if tipping would have even been expected if they didn’t do me this favor of moving the couch.

Just to keep it simple, I gave them twenty bucks apiece. On one hand, I think maybe paying $40 to get a couch moved up some steps is kinda steep, but on the other hand, a twenty spot isn’t even enough to buy a decent dinner for two anymore… I’m still not sure if I stiffed those guys or made their day…

Friday Creature

Here are the birds I mentioned in yesterday’s post. They’re a couple of (very talkative) Yellow Bellied Sapsuckers, who are probably just here for the winter. More creatures are boarding over on the modulator’s ark today. I’ll start up the shore birds I brought back from my Thanksgiving in Florida next week. Have a great weekend!
