Those Rabbit Holes…

You know how it goes. You open a window in your web browser, start out searching YouTube for clips of Tom Snyder and before you know it, a couple of hours have passed and you find yourself in some bizarre corner of the Internet, reading some obscure list on a dark and dusty remnant of some slightly-more-famous-than-the-rest-of-us dude’s website.

This is all a wind up to this crazy tibit: here’s a list of every book Art Garfunkel has read since 1968 — through January, 2006, anyway (via his wikientry).

I think I should go to bed now.

Goodnight!

Cinema, Football and Late Night TV

As I drove home this afternoon with NPR on the radio, I heard about the deaths of Ingmar Bergman, Bill Walsh and Tom Snyder, all lost either yesterday or this morning, the latter two of leukemia. What a rough beginning to the week.

Walsh’s Superbowl victories came along right during the peak of my interest in pro football (the NFL lost me with free agency and the ever-expanding rosters that include an increasing number of physical freaks, instead of the athletes who used to rule the game), so he was one of the last coaches I really enjoyed watching in action. He was a real class act — one of those quiet, understated greats, like Björn Borg or Martina Navratalova, who could be intensely competitive without making a lot of noise about it.

And I think I’ll be most sad to lose Tom Snyder, who not only entertained us when we were up too late (and brought us some ground-breaking interviews), but also gave us Dan Aykroyd’s Snyder impression, which is an institution in and of itself.

UPDATE: some highlights.

Friday Creature

I’m still in the Florida bird photos. This week’s featured creature is a black skimmer, which I’d never seen up close before. I feel lucky that these shots came out as well as they did — a little more detail would be nice, but I took them without the benefit of a zoom lens.

As always, don’t forget the other creatures on the ark and have a great weekend!

Star Days in Chattanooga

They streamed into the neighborhood in two long, snaking columns. I didn’t even know they were coming, but as I fixed my breakfast this morning, I heard the grumbling and roaring as hundreds of motorcycles flowed down McCallie Avenue and into a parking lot just up the block for a Feed the Children benefit.

The dog and I wandered over and mingled with the crowd for a little while. The Star Touring and Riding rally, which lasts through tomorrow, has been going on all week and people are here from all over the country. I’ve seen smaller clumps of bikers rolling about town recently, but didn’t know why they were all in town until today. I understand most of the visitors are staying over at the Choo-Choo, so if you’re an admirer of bikes, head on over and take a stroll through their parking lot. It’ll be a gorgeous sight!

Happy Blogversary!

It’s been three years. This whole thing was all started by my daughter, who kept after me for quite a while to join her on livejournal. I finally gave in, but I didn’t last long there (at the time, it felt like I was the only person on livejournal who was over the age of 20). My next stop was on my own server, using pivot, which was fun for a while, but it was also a lot of work fighting spammers and other evildoers all by myself. I eventually landed over on Chattablogs, and here I am, still ranting and spewing, three years on…

Thanks for visiting! {{tink!}}

Apple Computer Gets Ugly

It’s really starting to give me a bad taste in my mouth. It niggles at me.

The fact that there isn’t a better alternative to an Apple computer will probably keep me buying them, but maybe I won’t be such a fanatic any longer. Apple, Inc., long the underdog in the computer world, has, it appears, finally started to grow up. Or they’re at least getting a bit too big for their breeches, anyway.

They started out small in their journey towards the dark side, with a few unholy alliances. Steve Jobs got cozy with the Walt Disney Company, owner of the famous propagandist, ABC (remember the sham “docudrama,” Path to 9/11, that Disney/ABC foisted at us?).

Then they really broke away from their good guy image when they decided to force all iPhone owners into servitude with the unbelievably evil giant, AT&T.

But now, Apple has really gone bonkers. They’ve decided to charge an entrance fee to their stores and track customers while they shop (via dburr).

Wow. I’m speechless. It didn’t take long for Apple to go from scrappy innovator to Big Brother. I’m very disappointed. What do you think? Is this their Fonzie moment? Have they jumped the shark?

Update: ah. it’s a joke. doop! more here (and more from my “source” here).

The Weekend Disappeared!

I’m not sure where time is running off to lately. The weekend absolutely whizzed by in a blur of activity that, while not exciting in a “guess what I did this weekend” kind of way*, was enjoyable and productive. We…

  1. worked on the house. We now have updated audio and video in the living room!
  2. cooked good food. Grilled chicken one night, tortellini on another, and big Breakfast this morning! Life is too short to eat boring food.
  3. ate out. While the food at Aretha Frankensteins is great (mad props to the kitchen staff), they really do have absolutely the worst. service. ever. We had to beg for someone to take our order, beg for the check and we did a hell of lot of waiting between events. But the Italian omelette and Philly cheese steak were quite good. It’s too bad we can’t skip right to the good food, or we’d probably go more often.
  4. enjoyed the company of a few good friends.
  5. note: there was no Harry Potter, except for the few snippets of reportage on Pottermania that couldn’t be avoided while watching the weekend’s news programs.

*Dear Daughter, on the other hand, had a very exciting weekend, so if you want drama, energy, big thoughts and entertainment, jump over to her blog for a bit of reading.

Friday Creature

Ack! Where’d the day go?!?

This week I’ve got a great blue heron for your enjoyment. Sorry for the tardiness!

Have a fantastic weekend and give a gander at the other creatures on this week’s ark!
