Stonehenge Physics

Wally Wallington has demonstrated that he can lift a Stonehenge-sized pillar weighing 22,000 lbs and moved a barn over 300 ft. What makes this so special is that he does it using only himself, gravity, and his incredible ingenuity.

[Two women in line for the bathroom]
Woman #1: Hey! I remember you from when I worked at J. Peterman!
Woman #2: That’s right! Oh my god! I can’t believe you remembered me from that!

Bush’s War Dead

Every one of Bush’s 4000+ dead American soldiers has a story — one that includes lives and loved ones who were left behind. We’re not allowed to see the bodies of the dead being brought home to rest because the Bush administration doesn’t want the American people to think about the thousands of brave and loyal soldiers who have been consumed in his incredibly stupid war. As the deaths mount, it’s hard to keep up with the individual casualties and their stories, but here is one of the latest to give his life in Bush’s War, U.S. Army Staff Sargent Christopher M. Hake, who “had been married for just under three years and his father said going on the second tour of duty in Iraq was an enormously difficult choice — made all the more painful by having to leave his baby son.”

hakefamily.gifWhen George W. Bush flew with great fanfare onto the USS Abraham Lincoln on May 1, 2003 and announced from the flight deck that the war in Iraq was all but over, I’m sure there were sighs of relief among America’s military families. I’m sure they believed that what he had said in feverishly promoting the Iraq invasion was true — that this would be a quick victory, with little loss of military life and that his team knew what they were doing in the occupation that would follow.

“Major combat operations in Iraq have ended,” declared Bush, in a nationally televised address, backed by a giant banner proclaiming “mission accomplished.”

With that statement, the president who lied the country and the U.S. Congress into the Iraq quagmire was again deceiving the American people, but this time the deception was that the toughest times in Iraq had past.

Of course, everyone now knows the truth.

We know that 96 percent of the Americans killed in Iraq have died since Bush boasted that our mission was accomplished and we know with sickening assurance that we have hit the hideous milestone of 4,000 of our own dead in the Bush administration’s war of choice.

[...]

These were our sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, who because of the policies of the Bush administration will never hug their spouses or parents again and will never see their kids grow up.

And near or on number 4,000, we should remember the face of Christopher M. Hake, who died at only 26 years old.

The soldier’s MySpace page is still up and still holds pictures of him, his young wife and his beautiful baby boy. And his last post, from January 9, 2008, is a haunting reminder of an American full of hope, trying to do the right thing but who ultimately only wanted to return home to his family.

“I will be going on mid-tour leave in July. Kelli, Gage and I are going to spend that time in GA by ourselves,” wrote Hake in explaining to his family back home in Oklahoma. “This will be the first time in 8 years I haven’t gone to OK for vacation. But our priorities have changed drastically since we had our son.”

“But when I do come home for good in ‘09, we will see everyone. Continue to keep our little family in your prayers. We will keep all of you in ours.”

West Wing Quote

If our job teaches us anything, it’s that we don’t know what the next President’s gonna face. And if we choose someone with vision, someone with guts, someone with gravitas, who’s connected to other people’s lives, and cares about making them better… if we choose someone to inspire us, then we’ll be able to face what comes our way and achieve things… we can’t imagine yet.

Toby Zeigler

(Surely, we can improve on the current, criminally unimaginative, adminstration…)

Friday Creature

I don’t make it out to Chattanooga’s big mall area very often (and I haven’t been inside the actual beast in years), so imagine my surprise when I found myself out in the vicinity this past week, and discovered that there is a retention pond out there now. And if you have a pond, what else do you get? Mall geese, of course! I don’t know how recently the pond was added, but now I’m wondering how long it took for the geese to follow…

Boy, that week just flew by! I can’t believe we’re back at another Friday already, creatures and all! Have a wonderful weekend, everyone. Be safe, happy and enjoy the spring weather!

Et tu, Chattanooga?

Apparently we’ve been scamming drivers by playing with the yellow lights.

The city of Chattanooga was forced refund $8800 in red light cameras tickets issued to motorists trapped by an illegally short yellow time. The refund only occurred after a motorist challenged his citation by insisting that the yellow light time of 3.0 seconds was too short. LaserCraft, the private vendor that runs the camera program in return for a cut of the profits, provided the judge with a computer database that asserted the yellow was 3.8 seconds at that location.

The judge then personally checked the intersection in question was timed at three seconds while other nearby locations had about four seconds of yellow warning. City traffic engineer John Van Winkle told Bean that “a mix up with the turn arrow” was responsible and that the bare minimum for the light should be 3.9 seconds.

Quote of the Day

I certainly get a lot more out of it than they do…If anything, it’s made me angrier… You can be for the war, against the war, but you can’t be uninformed about it. To see the human cost is part of the equation.

Jon Stewart, who has been quietly visiting wounded soldiers since 2004

Go On! Get Busy!

Come on, all you people who wish we had better shopping options in Chattanooga! You want a Trader Joe’s? Costco? Whole Foods? Then get on the horn to your representatives and get the laws changed in Tennessee so that these stores will be motived to do business here (yeah, I know I’ve been on this hobby horse before, but it bears repeating!)! Adam Groves has info about the bill, and Joe Lance responds to the retailers and suggests you contact your legislators!
