I haven’t gotten to go on a photo hunt yet, but I did need some paint recently and found this little bird sitting on the carts outside of Lowe’s. Finch? Sparrow? You tell me.
Have a great weekend, everyone, and check out the creatures on the ark at some point!

I really need to go off on a photo hunt, because I’m running low on creatures. But I found this guy in the archives — he apparently got lost in the summer shuffle, because I don’t think he’s been featured before. I found him in the backyard (no doubt resting after escaping from the fearsome beast who thinks chasing lizards is a sport!).
Other creatures are, as always, lining up on the Modulator’s Ark. Have a great weekend, folks! Be safe and warm!

Today’s creature comes courtesy of a guest photographer — I got out my camera yesterday, but then got so busy with meal preparations that I didn’t take many pictures. Fortunately, Emmie picked up the slack, and she caught this image of the tortured dog (don’t let all that comfort fool you — at that point, the aromas from the kitchen were irresistible!), waiting for someone to throw her a bone. Never fear, though. While her plight required patience, she was eventually rewarded with some turkey and gravy, and then she even got to help us clean the plates and platters after the meal was over.
And now, on this Black Friday — or Buy Nothing Day, if that’s the way you swing — while the rest of America is elbowing the competition away from that last $25 Blu Ray player, or digging around in the attic looking for the Christmas lights, or back at the office, enjoying a rare quiet day, or placing an order at amazon.com — the creatures are all happily lining up over on the Modulator’s Ark! Check them out, enjoy this nebulous day, tucked in between the holiday and the weekend, and remember to buy local — our economy is hurting, so keep your money here instead of sending it to the Chinese!

Soup was not originally part of my plans for the weekend, but I’ve ended up cooking rather compulsively. Yesterday, I realized I had a lot of produce I needed to use up, so I whipped up the kohlrabi stew. And this morning, I woke up with some ragingly angry sinuses and the sore throat that sometimes comes along with a clogged up nose, so before I’d even had any breakfast, I was tossing some chicken into a pot so that I’d be able to enjoy a steaming, comforting bowl of soup at lunchtime (a loose recipe and some evangelism follows after the bump).

Before getting a CSA subscription this year with Crabtree Farms, I’d never even heard of kohlrabi, but apparently it’s pretty common in Europe. This afternoon I tried a recipe for Kohlrabi Stew that came in this week’s newsletter. It’s a delicious hearty, tasty winter soup. The recipe follows after the jump!
