I’m home again, after an awesome whirlwind weekend with family, lots of time behind the wheel, and a wedding. I’ll see if I can get caught up this evening…
After spending four of the last six days in the car, I’m so over this view:
It was a fun trip, it was great to get to see (most of) the family and I’m very happy to be home for the (rest of the) summer. More later!

Big Stupid Tommy linked to a blogger’s story about people dumping the ashes of people at Disneyland this week. It reminded me that I haven’t posted much about my recent adventures, which involved both the scattering of ashes and Disney — though not contemporaneously, but rather as back-to-back events.
First was a family gathering here in Chattanooga for the anniversary of my mother’s death last year. We got together down here because her family has their own cemetery in Huntsville. Everyone stayed at my house and we drove down to Alabama for the day on the 30th. My mother has a stone next to the graves of her parents, and we scattered some of her ashes there during a service before having lunch together and going over to my grandparents’ old neighborhood to visit with friends and see a few landmarks. We had our lunch at the tiny church my grandfather attended in his retirement (he was a presbyterian minister), which has a beautiful little sanctuary:
Well, I’m having trouble getting back into the swing of things around here. I’m sorry if you’ve been let down by the light content lately. I’ve had a busy, wonderful couple of weeks, starting with a week here in Chattanooga with my whole family (peaking at 17 houseguests!), and a great memorial service down at the family cemetery in Huntsville on the anniversary of my mother’s death. That was followed immediately by the trip to Florida (with some of my siblings) for my uncle’s surprise 70th birthday party at Epcot. It was quite the whirlwind, and I returned home to lots of laundry and a really messy house, and I’m still trying to return some order around here. I have lots of cool photos (I think), but haven’t had the time to sort through them all yet. I’ll dig something out for WW tomorrow and hopefully by the weekend, I’ll be back up to speed. Thanks for your continued patience!
I made it from Orlando to Chattanooga in just a little over 8 hours today. Just me. In the car. With my iPod.*

Tonight is the second time I’ve picked a hotel based on their promise of in-room wi-fi and for the second time, it hasn’t worked out. The first time was some hotel in Murfreesboro and it just plain didn’t work. This time (at the Red Roof Inn), it works, but only if I go sit on the floor out in the hallway, next to the storage room that reportedly houses the router. Has anyone out there found a hotel that follows up on the promise of wi-fi?
Anyway, the good news is that we’re just four or five hours from home, in Lexington, KY. We had a really enjoyable dinner and are looking forward to a good night’s sleep before we race home in the morning to liberate the dog from the kennel. It will be great to be home and I have no plans to travel again any time soon. I have a lot of catching up to do…
Well, we’re back in the car tomorrow for the trip home, which will take a day or two, depending on our mood for driving. If I can find any wifi action along the way, I’ll keep you posted…
I completely forgot about Friday Creature yesterday, but some of the kids just found a baby duck being chased by a cat and they rescued it, so here’s he is just a day late.
